Not Your Usual Comeback Story

Nov 24, 2006 Author: eric | Filed under: Music News, WikiMusicGuide | Bookmark and Share

It’s not usual for an artist to have the same comeback story as Celine Dion. After a three year career hiatus, she returned to the music scene with a record breaking contract of 750 series of concerts from 2004 to 2006. Due to the high show demand where nearly 2.5 million fans had seen, the series of concerts is extended until 2007.

Celine is just your usual artist who made it big, and vanished. But with the right reasons, her sacrifice to take care of her husband suffering from throat cancer, being away from music scene for nearly 4 years turned out to be a blessing in disguised. And when she came back, she’s on top of the world. Huge artist names such as Elton John, Michael Jackson, Halle Berry and among others also took time to watch the most sought after concert series in the world held nightly at the Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

Not Your Usual Band Story

Nov 22, 2006 Author: anna | Filed under: WikiMusicGuide | Bookmark and Share

Being able to read numerous biographies of singers and groups of our time, these pages most often start with the paragraph that tells the people about how they started; who, what and where they were when they were still kids and growing up. It is not far until you read something about them finding their musical side, deciding to develop their new-found talent, and landing a successful musical career— topped with RIAA Certifications, Grammy’s and chart-busting hit singles.

Most bands and groups started out as good friends and buddies; some come from a network of friends when they were in their teens, and despite the struggles of being an adolescent, they go up their feet and play the music they really want to hear. It may be difficult for these bands to find the perfect match to build a tremendously promising group, but when they do, they are unstoppable!

The story of post-punk band The Killers is quite different compared to those other bands. They were not good friends, nor high school chums that played in the prom or a college gig. The group started with a little twist of fate when vocalist Brandon Flowers got kicked out of a band; while guitarist David Keuning was desperately seeking in the classifieds for someone who digs Oasis and could make great music with him. The duo started to perform together, doing some gigs, the singer-guitarist did quite well themselves.

Not long after, they come across two other band members Mark Stroemer and Ronnie Vannucci who played the bass and drums respectively. This fresh young group took the world by storm because of their musical talents and their passion in creating music that engross alternative-rock fans.

And so their story goes; presently, the band is known for their single “When They Were Young” from their latest album “Sam’s Town” that was illustrious because of the unique combination of new sounds from David Bowie, to U2 to Oasis. The Killers also bagged a number of awards from Billboard Music Awards, MTV Music Awards, and the Grammy’s including “Best Rock Album” for launching album in 2004 entitled “Hot Fuss”. The same album also achieved a Platinum status shortly after its release.

The band is different in how they met, they have a rather distinct style and they are already conquering the music scene! Fate may have put these four men together, and fate surely did a great job uniting them!

WMG’s First Newspaper Article

Nov 20, 2006 Author: anna | Filed under: WikiMusicGuide | Bookmark and Share

Tapping the Public
By Lauren Garisson
Published: Norwalk Citizen News, November 16, 2006

Norwalk resident Bienvenido David III recently created what he hopes will become “the largest music resource online, with the help of the online community,” a Web site known as WikiMusicGuide.

WMG, at www.wikimusicguide.com, includes hundreds of pages on artists, albums, songs and composers. The site is a Wiki, defined on WMG’s welcome page as being “written collaboratively by users like you.” Users should “find something that can be improved, either in content, grammar or formatting,” the welcome page states. “We encourage you to be bold, but please don’t vandalize.” The philosophy behind Wikis is that because anyone may contribute, the process of users editing one another’s writing on topics will eventually result in the most accurate information.

David explained that WMG differs from Wikipedia arguably the most famous Wiki, which also includes information on music in that “we write about the artist from a music fan’s point of view.”

“Whenever I learn about a new artist that I like, I tell all my friends about it,” he said. “It’s like telling your friends about the artist you love but on a bigger scale.” Thus, he said, WMG not only gives information about artists but also works to promote them.

WMG provides a wide array of facts, including artists’ history, albums and chart hits, news and user reviews, according to David.

David, an information technology consultant with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, moved to Connecticut in 2000 from the Philippines, where he grew up. He created WMG because he wanted to start something “new and fun,” he said.

“I bought a couple of music CDs and really enjoyed listening to them, and then it hit me why can’t I start something related to music?” He bought the domain www.wikimusicguide.com in 2005 and has been working on the site ever since. The site went live on Oct. 2.

To get things started, David said he wrote the first artist and album pages. “I needed to come up with a template so people have something to follow,” he explained, adding, “I’m not good at writing so I build artist pages but let others work on the creative writing part. Most of my time now is spent on managing the project.”

One of David’s colleagues on the site works on search engine optimization, another helps administer the site and five are writers. At present, he said, these writers are contributing complete pages to the site, while users from the online community contribute small sections. “This is expected since it takes time to create a complete page,” he explained.

David said he is pleased with the site’s growth thus far. “A lot of new editors came in, so it’s been good. I wouldn’t say it has expanded quickly, but it has expanded. We welcome contributions from everyone, even if it’s just putting up the picture of their favorite artist or writing a single paragraph about them.” The site is free to view and to contribute to. However, David said, during the site’s beta phase, users must request an invitation code in order to register and edit pages. This can be done by sending e-mail to invite at wikimusicguide.com.

David planned to target users 16 to 32 years old who “love music and spend a few hours on the Internet per day.” He does not know who visits WMG in actuality, but can only guess based on their means of referral. “A lot of referrals come from sites like Digg.com, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Wikipedia and Google. Based on users of these Web sites, we can conclude that these people are Web savvy and within our target age group. We also get users from all around the world,” he said.

To attract more users, David said he has sent press releases to local newspapers, magazines and popular technical Web sites. “We have been lucky to be picked up by a few of them,” he said. “We will continue spreading the word, mostly through different communication channels on the Internet.”

The costs of running WMG are low at present, said David, but he expects to spend a lot more for hosting once the site grows. His job as an IT consultant has been covering the costs of WMG up to now, he said. He also runs WebbyShop.com, which he describes as “an e-commerce site specializing in portable karaoke microphones.”

“For me, family is first,” said David, who has a 1-year-old son, Nathan. “I work to get the bills paid, play with my kid next. Whatever time I have left, I pour on to the Wiki. I had to cut down on sleep to squeeze a few more hours per day.”

David thinks sites like his “are the future.”

“The biggest sites on the Internet are all community-based eBay, Digg, Del.icio.us, YouTube, MySpace, Wikipedia, etc. Wikis are another medium for running community sites.” In particular, David pointed out Wikipedia, to which he believes people would have said “no way” a few years ago. “Now it’s the biggest information resource on the Internet with high-quality content. It’s hard to do a Google search without seeing Wikipedia somewhere in the first page.”

As for WMG, David said, “This will take time, but we’re here for the long run.”

The Role of Major Record Labels in Music

Nov 8, 2006 Author: eric | Filed under: Music Articles, WikiMusicGuide | Bookmark and Share

Music has become an integral part of one’s life.  If you try to recall, I doubt there would be a single day that you haven’t heard of music.  A collection of CD’s, albums, and even cassette tapes are mostly present in every home.  Everyday, music gets to us. It can be through the help of new music gadgets such as IPod, Walkman, MP3 players or the stereos.  But the big question would be — who decides and what music is to be played? Where to buy it and how it can get to us? The answer can be found in recording label. Yes! The major record label has the definite answer to these questions.

The role of the record label takes on a new leap in the music industry.  It’s vital and essential.  They take on new or old artist to promote their music. Its fare will be determined how well the record label has promoted and handled the artist and album.  Basically, a recording company signs a deal or contract with an artist for a certain period of time and number of album releases. They organize and plan effective promotional strategies. Coordinating to other companies for tour promotions and public or
sponsorship events are also done by them.

Today’s big five music labels include Universal Records, Sony Music, EMI, Warner Brothers and BMG Entertainment.  These labels take the lead in increasing the number of music listeners each year that simultaneously go with the number of babies born. Nearly 90% of the popular music or movie collection comes from these giant recording labels. Just try going to some music stores and you will learn that these five big labels are dominating the market today.

However, if you happen to find a new that was not under to one of them, worry no more! It’s not pirated. Statistically there are more than hundred music labels which are a subsidiary of the big five.  Motown is now under Universal while Capital Records is already under EMI, just a few to mention.

What music we listen today is mainly determined by the major music labels.  The naked truth is that through these record labels, music comes to us and become an integral part of our lives.
