ONCE

A month ago, I checked online for good movies to watch and stumbled upon a list. Reading through this list I extracted over the net, I came upon a low-budget Irish indie entitled ONCE. Going over its review, I became amusingly interested, and so included it in my catalog of films to watch. Then I went movie hunting in video stores armed with a flicks-to-include-in-my-movie-marathon list. In one occassion, I was able to rake through racks with The Breakfast Club, Mucha Lucha’s The Return of El Maléfico and finally, ONCE. To cut the story short, I was able to get a copy of the movie and watched it…more than once.
Once is sort of a modern musical which won an Academay Award for Best Musical Score. It’s an Irish music film written and directed by John Carney, shot in Dublin, and starred by musicians Glen Hansard of famous Irish rock band The Frames and Markéta Irglová. Both collaborated, composed and performed the songs on the movie.
Watching the movie is one really entertaining journey, going through thoroughfares of the characters’ broken relationships and their own budding romance which seemed transient, along with lovely piano and guitars and vocals all played together forming beautiful beautiful music. There were more music than script there actually, and it served as the storyteller. Ah, there’s just so much beauty in it that I was left speechless after watching it—the simple storyline, the natural acting, the Dublin backdrop, and of course, the music. I especially liked the tracks “Say It to Me Now,” “Falling Slowly,” “When Your Mind’s Made Up,” “Lies,” and “Fallen from the Sky.”
If you like music and a fine story altogether then watch this. I super loved it. You might too. (:
