March 6, 1982: Once a bunch of garbage bag-wearing, hard-partying L.A. punks, The Go-Gos hit No. 1 on the pop album charts with ‘Beauty and the Beat.’

March 7, 1999: In honor of their induction into the San Francisco Walk of Fame, Mayor Willie Brown proclaims this to be ‘Metallica Day.’

March 7, 1987: The Beastie Boys‘ ‘Licensed to Ill,’ featuring timeless classics like ‘Brass Monkey’ and ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn,’ becomes the first rap album to hit the top of the album charts.

March 8, 1975: Not satisfied with having conquered the world of TV, Telly Savalas reaches the top of the British singles charts with ‘If.’

March 9, 1997: Christopher George Latore Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls, aka Big Poppa, is shot and killed following Vibe magazine’s Soul Train Music Awards after-party.

March 11, 1997: In recognition for his ’services to music, a former Beatle is knighted Sir Paul McCartney.

March 12, 1987: ‘Les Miserables’ opens on Broadway. Its 6,680 performances will rank third all time, the poster will find its way into every dorm on Earth and the t-shirt will become equally ubiquitous.

March 13, 2006: Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler — collectively known as Black Sabbath — are inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, as are Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Sex Pistols.

March 14, 1933: Quincy Jones, one of the most influential musicians of the last 50 years, was born.

March 15, 1972: Police are called to radio station KHJ in Los Angeles when DJ Robert W. Morgan spins Donny Osmond’s ‘Puppy Love’ for 90 minutes straight.

March 16, 1959: William Jonathan Drayton Jr. is born on Long Island. After dropping out of high school, he will spin records under the name MC DJ Flavor Flav at Adelphi University. While there he will meet Carlton Ridenhour, a.k.a. Chuck D, and together they will form Public Enemy.
