Feb. 11, 1989: Seven years after the recording format is introduced, U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’ becomes the first CD to sell a million copies.
Feb. 11, 1983: “Weird Al” Yankovic records ‘Ricky’ — a goof on Tony Basil’s hit single ‘Mickey’ — for his self-titled debut album. It will go on to be his first single to break the top 100, peaking at No. 63.
Feb. 9, 1985: Madonna’s sophomore album ‘Like a Virgin’ hits the top of the Billboard charts. The record goes on to spawn five top 10 singles and sell more than 10 million copies.
Feb. 8, 1981: R.E.M. road trips to Bombay Studios in rural Georgia to make their first studio recordings, including ‘Gardening At Night,’ ‘Radio Free Europe’ and ‘(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville.’
Feb. 7, 2006: America lets out a collective gasp as photos of Britney Spears driving with her five-month-old son in her lap are made public. Local police later visit her home to give her a talking to, but decide not to press charges.
Feb. 6, 1990: A near-fatal motorcycle crash confines Billy Idol to bed for six months. He would later say of the incident, “I wish I’d left a ruder message on my answer phone.”
Feb. 6, 1988: ‘Bring the Noise,’ from Public Enemy’s seminal album ‘It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back’ becomes the band’s first single to reach the Billboard charts.
Feb. 5, 1962: With drummer Pete Best feeling ill, the Beatles ask Ringo Starr of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, to sit in with them for two gigs.
Feb. 4, 1977: Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours,’ 40 minutes and three seconds of raw break-up rage, is released. The album will go No. 1, spawn four top ten singles, win the Grammy for Album of the Year and sell more than 19 million copies.
Feb. 3, 1959: It’s the day the music died, as a plane carrying Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Buddy Holly goes down over North Dakota.
Feb. 3, 1948: The world’s most beloved bat-biter, John Michael Osbourne, Ozzy to his friends, is born in Birmingham, England.
