Headphones: a Factor on Hearing Loss

This might be old news for all of us, but a constant reminder about this topic won’t hurt, will it?
Studies performed by audiologists on the effect of headphones to man’s hearing dates back in the 1980’s when the Walkman was first introduced in the market. But today, mp3’s that can store more songs and have a longer battery life encourages more people to use these devices for longer periods of time.
Experts say, that the intensity of sound that is produced using today’s earbud headphones are WAY over the capacity of man’s ear structures. As listeners try to “drown” the sound of their environment with high music volumes, they create an intense frequency of sound, so intense, that it is equivalent to the sound made at rock concerts! Such stress to a human ear can easily lead to hearing loss.
So, what are we to do?
As recommended by the experts, listeners can still use their headphones, but no more than 1 hour everyday and at levels only 60% of the maximum volume. This is called the 60 percent/60 minute rule.
Music is generally beautiful to the ears, let’s take caution so as not to make it harmful for us.
