’80s baby!

Who would forget this era of fishnet stockings, leggings, MC Hammer pants, neon-printed everything, plus the crazy hair all together? The period of arcade games, VCR’s, home videos and multiplex theaters; teenage flicks that started all teenage flicks thanks to the genius of John Hughes; simply great music, and the beginning of the whole MTV generation with their first ever “Video Killed the Radio Star”?

I wouldn’t. Besides the ’60s, the ’80s has been THE era for me.

It was the decade of synthesizers, drum machines and electronic keyboards that birthed New Wave. Devo, A-HA, The Cars, Softcell, China Crisis, and other New Wavers entered the arena. It was the setting of Hair Metal such as Van Halen, Motley Crue and Guns n’ Roses. Along with, ’80s was the backdrop of hardcore punk. It was when hip-hop got its roots, with Grandmaster Flash and other artists bringing hip-hop to the main scene.

In movies, ’80s was when Harrison Ford got his name established, starring in timeless films such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It transformed Molly Ringwald into the icon of teenage youth, as the popular lead girl character in Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. Teen comedy was instituted, bringing Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Weird Science in the movie scene. Sean Penn was the high school lazybones, John Cusack was the teenage heartthrob, and Matthew Broederick was the rich jock. And then they became superstars afterwards.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas started their blockbuster directing, from Indiana Jones’
Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Back to the Future series, and Star Wars’ The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Inside the boob tube there were Angus McGyver, the ingenious secret agent who doesn’t carry a gun; detective Crockett and his partner Tubbs in Miami Vice; Jessica Fletcher, the mystery writer in Murder, She Wrote, among others.

Back to the cool music, ’80s New Wave brought forth the present post-punk/post-New Wave generation, with bands Bloc Party, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and similar artists sprouting in the music spot. This just show how influential ’80s is, and is still alive in a different form.
