This week’s American Idol voting off episode is a mark in American Idol six-year history. For one, all six contestants were announced safe, which was a first for this singing competition. Initially it came to a shock when Jordin Sparks was left as the last one standing, until host Ryan Seacrest broke the no-elimination news. What’s more, the number of votes after the performance night reached a whopping 70 million, which set another record for American Idol.

The main attraction though of Wednesday night’s show, besides the no-goodbye-for-now and highest voting record, was the IDOL GIVES BACK two-part special. A concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was held at the same time of the show, to raise funds for charity projects that would grant programs for poverty-stricken places in Africa and America. The concert was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, who herself promised to donate a considerable sum of money for the cause. The two-hour special featured performances by the top 6 finalists singing Quincy Jones‘ composition “Time to Care” while guest Celine Dion rendered a duet with the late Elvis Presley in “If I Can Dream.” The top 6 finalists concluded the show with Bono and Dave Stewart’s selected song “American Prayer.” Bono even personally shared his insights during the finalists’ rehearsals.

At the Walt Disney Concert Hall, famed artists in the music industry performed for the benefit event including Earth, Wind & Fire, Il Divo, Rascal Flatts, Josh Groban with the African Children’s Choir, Kelly Clarkson with Jeff Beck accompanying the guitars, and Annie Lennox.

Plenty of celebrities also made guest appearances in the two-part special to show support and encourage viewers to donate. Judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and host Seacrest featured the places they visited that revealed the current situation of poverty and sickness in these areas. Carrie Underwood even went to Africa to sing for the children and make a music video for Idol Gives Back, namely “I’ll Stand By You.”

All the proceeds raised in this event will go to Charity Projects Entertainment Fund (CPEF) and its charity beneficiaries.
