A True Music Icon, Ahmet Ertegun
After almost two months of being comatose due to brain injury, Ahmet Ertegun has finally surrendered his life on Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 at age of 83. On Oct 29, Mr. Ertegun fell backstage at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan while The Rolling Stones is preparing for a concert performance in the former president Bill Clinton’s birthday.
Ahmet Ertegun gave the music industry the best of jazz as well as rock music through his discoveries such as Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and John Coltrane. As a founder of the Atlantic Records, he dedicated himself in shaping these artists career and improving his craft. He made history with the works and contributions in the music industry.
At age 9, Mr. Ertegun began to show his interest in music. With his love and sincerity to his craft, he then pursue his dream through the help of a family dentist where he borrowed $10,000 to start his music record company in 1947, the Atlantic Records.
Over the years, he had developed a unique sound with the mixed of rhythm and blues, jazz and rock and roll. He led Ray Charles to his fame when they released “I Got A Woman”. Joe Turner, one of the roots of rock and roll was also given a chance to be known when Atlantic Records released the “Shake, Rattle and Roll” single.
He got married with Iona Maria Banu on April 6, 1961 who later on became a well-known interior designer during her time. In 1967, he decided to sell his recording company to Warner Brothers-Seven Arts for $17 million. But his dreams did not end there. He continued to make records and became an instrument of true rock and roll until the accident.
For more than six decades in the music industry, Mr. Ahmet Ertegun has truly inspired billions of people with his life and achievements. He may not live a perfect life but he has spent it fruitfully. A salute to a true music icon of all time, Ahmet Ertegun – We thank you for your music.

Fortunately, I had the extreme pleasure to know and socialize with the “Master of the Music Industry.” Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, always tailored and dapper in his suit and tie, could “out party” the youngsters that he would surround himself with. I will truly miss his mischievous smile, his soulful voice and his warm hospitality. Mr. Ertegun was an absolute “class act!” Comfort to Ms. Mica Ertegun, whom he was so proud of… SP
