One of my recent song discoveries is the song from America entitled “Right Before Your Eyes”. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to hear songs that aren’t playing that much on the radio.
Right Before Your Eyes was written by Ian Thomas and was introduced on his album in 1977. It was then recorded by America in 1982 and was their second single in their album, View from the Ground. Imagine, I was only 1 year old when this song aired. Cool stuff from the oldies, I should say!
In the lyrics of the song, the names “Rudolph Valentino” and “Greta Garbo” are mentioned in the chorus several times. I became interested and did some researches on who are these two people. Maybe for those who have lived in that era can answer this question.
So who are they, really? For those who heard the song for the first time and would like to know if these two prominent names really exist, then here’s what Wikipedia has to say,
Rudolph Valentino (May 6, 1895 – August 23, 1926) was an Italian actor who starred in several well-known silent films including The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle, and The Son of the Sheik.
Greta Garbo (18 September 1905 – 15 April 1990), born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, was a Swedish film actress and an international star and icon during Hollywood’s silent and classic periods.
So… now we know!
Here’s a video of Right Before Your Eyes by America with lyrics included. I chose to embed this video because it shows a story play of the song.
